Recipe boxes hold treasures. The hand-written and typed recipes, and the clippings from newspapers, magazines and the sides of a box or a bag—they connect us with people we love, eras of our lives, and memories from times and places represented by those recipes.
With Long Live the Recipe Box, I will be celebrating these treasured recipe collections and the stories and connections they hold that bring such richness to our lives. This is inspired by the joy I get from having my mom’s tattered, held-together-with-packing-tape recipe folder seen in the photo above. It truly is one of my greatest treasures, and it’s helped me feel connected to her in the couple-plus decades since she’s been gone.
Part of my goal is also to encourage everyone to be sure they collect ALL those recipes that hold meaning for them. Don’t wait! Do it now. Reach out to ask for the recipes, make plans to cook with them, do what you can to capture the ingredient and preparation details, and whatever stories there are that go along with those recipes.
